Travel Guide: Geneva

Accommodation

Geneva is classy, international and therefore expensive. It is also a beautiful city. I stayed there in March 2001, and the short list below is the result of my web-searching for medium-priced hotels. In the end I doubt I could have chosen better. The Hôtel des Tourelles is right next to the mighty Hôtel du Rhône. It is the only two-star hotel on the river. The rooms are small but well-equipped and the staff are friendly. Breakfast is included.

A few tips:

Avoid the big conferences, the motor show in March, telecoms in October and many others. These can clog up Geneva's hotel network
The city centre is compact so try and stay close by, then you can walk everywhere

Home at Home	Central location, good value three-star
Hôtel des Tourelles	Excellent value, great location. Why stay anywhere else?

Getting Around

Geneva is an excellent transport hub, with air, road and rail connections

From the centre of town long-distance bus routes serve most of Europe, with good connections to the Alps.
The ultra-efficient Swiss Railways will whisk you over the country in comfort.
Explore Lake Geneva by boat.
Get around the city on the local bus network.

Miscellaneous

The outstanding Red Cross Museum is fascinating. Brilliantly designed and eye-opening.
The tourist office or the alternative Geneva guide are good places to start browsing the city.
